Seniors&rsquo; Falls in Canada &#8211; a message from Health Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\">The Public Health Agency is pleased to announce the release of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phac-aspc.gc.ca\/seniors-aines\/publications\/public\/index-eng.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:blue;font-family:Arial;\"><i><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Seniors\u2019 Falls in Canada: Second Report<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\">. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\">The Report is an analysis of national datasets from Statistics Canada and the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). \u00a0It is an update to the previous <i>2005 Report on Seniors Falls in Canada<\/i>. \u00a0The Report provides current facts on the nature and severity of falls among Canadian adults age 65 and over. \u00a0<\/span><!--more--><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\">As the country\u2019s overall population ages, Canadians are living longer and in better health. \u00a0Nevertheless, falls continue to be the leading cause of injury among older adults. \u00a0The 2013 report highlights that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\">In 2010-2011, the average Canadian senior had to stay in hospital 10 days longer for falls than for any other cause;\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\">50% of all falls causing hospitalization happen at home;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\">Self-reported injuries due to falls rose 43% between 2003 and 2008;
