More than two decades after its onset, the HIV-AIDS pandemic remains an enormous challenge in Canada and around the world.<\/span><span style=\"color:#2f2f2f;font-family:Arial;font-size:small;\">AIDS continues to be a global health issue. According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:blue;font-family:Arial;font-size:small;\"><u>Joint United Nations Programme on HIV\/AIDS<\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#2f2f2f;font-family:Arial;font-size:small;\">, 34 million people were living with HIV worldwide in 2011.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phac-aspc.gc.ca\/aids-sida\/index-eng.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:#104160;font-family:Arial;font-size:small;\">Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#2f2f2f;font-family:Arial;font-size:small;\"> was first detected in Canada more than 30 years ago. Since then, thousands of Canadians continue to become infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) every year.<\/span><span style=\"color:#2f2f2f;font-family:Arial;font-size:small;\">HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system, resulting in a chronic, progressive illness that leaves people vulnerable to infections.
