First stage<\/strong><\/span> of our new maritime heritage project: taking <\/span>Peggy<\/i> to Bic for her first repairs.<\/p>

After nearly 70 years spent in a barn, Peggy<\/i> went for a visit to Bic last Autumn for a check up at the old Mill in Bic, where Daniel St-Pierre and now his successor Pierre-Luc Morin, boat builders, have their workshop. On June 13th, she was taken there for actual professional repair. She is now in good hands and under expert eyes of Pierre-Luc and his apprentice Corentin Briand.<\/p>

First steps involve careful examination of the boat\u2019s structure. Already we have learned that Peggy<\/i> was transformed through time. The different stages remain to be timed more precisely from the available evidence.<\/p>

More on Peggy<\/i>:<\/p>

Although more investigations are required, here is what we currently seem to know about the sailboat\u2019s history. Probably originally built in Quebec City for racing on calm waters, it belonged to the Royal St-Lawrence Yacht Club (Dorval) until 1936, when they changed the class and sold it to Mr. Fleet who brought it to Metis Beach. At the end of WWII, it was given to Grant Astle, who renamed it ‘Peggy’. It was used by Grant Astle’s family’s hotel, Seaside House, to take visiting guests out sailing until the fall of 1949, when it was stored permanently in the Seaside House carriage barn. It remained there until John E. (‘Ted’) Savage and Sean Veit moved it in the fall of 2018, after Sean Veit had acquired the barn with the boat.<\/p>

Sean Veit has pledged to donate Peggy<\/i> to the community through Heritage Lower Saint Lawrence. The family and local residents raised funds to pay for her first repairs.<\/p>

Hands-on workshops on boat maintenance, boat building and navigation will be held by and for members of the community around Peggy<\/i>, after her launch in August and until the next sailing season. An exceptional opportunity to get to know a wooden sailboat intimately, to learn with and from experienced sailors and boatbuilders and to contribute as a team to the preservation of this collective material heritage.<\/p>

Premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape<\/strong><\/span> de notre nouveau projet autour du patrimoine maritime : mener Peggy au Bic pour ses premi\u00e8res r\u00e9parations.<\/span><\/p>

Apr\u00e8s avoir pass\u00e9 pr\u00e8s de 70 ans dans une grange, Peggy s’est rendue au Bic l’automne dernier pour une premi\u00e8re visite de contr\u00f4le au vieux Moulin du Bic, o\u00f9 Daniel St-Pierre et son successeur Pierre-Luc Morin, chaloupiers, ont leur atelier. Le 13 juin dernier, le bateau y a \u00e9t\u00e9 emmen\u00e9 pour une v\u00e9ritable r\u00e9paration professionnelle. Il est maintenant entre de bonnes mains et sous les yeux experts de Pierre-Luc et de son apprenti Corentin Briand.<\/p>

Les premi\u00e8res \u00e9tapes consistent en un examen minutieux de la structure du bateau. On a d\u00e9j\u00e0 pu observer que Peggy a \u00e9t\u00e9 modifi\u00e9e au cours du temps. Les diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9tapes doivent encore \u00eatre dat\u00e9es avec plus de pr\u00e9cision \u00e0 partir des \u00e9l\u00e9ments dont nous disposons.<\/p>

Plus sur Peggy :<\/p>

Bien que des investigations suppl\u00e9mentaires soient n\u00e9cessaires, voici ce que nous semblons savoir actuellement sur le voilier. Probablement construit \u00e0 l’origine \u00e0 Qu\u00e9bec pour des courses en eaux calmes, il a appartenu au Royal St-Lawrence Yacht Club (Dorval) jusqu’en 1936, date \u00e0 laquelle il a \u00e9t\u00e9 vendu \u00e0 M. Fleet qui l’a amen\u00e9 \u00e0 Metis Beach. \u00c0 la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 donn\u00e9 \u00e0 Grant Astle, qui l’a rebaptis\u00e9 Peggy<\/i>. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 par l’h\u00f4tel de la famille de Grant Astle, Seaside House, pour emmener les visiteurs faire de la voile jusqu’\u00e0 l’automne 1949, puis il a \u00e9t\u00e9 entrepos\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on permanente dans la remise \u00e0 voitures de Seaside House.
