The HLSL Community Profile showcases the stories of remarkable people who are part of our community, and highlights the voices of those who are making a difference.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

One person who is certainly on our radar at HLSL is Metis resident Ted Savage. His contribution to Metis and all of eastern Quebec is too important to miss. Ted was honored with the <\/span>Public Safety Canada\u2019s Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award <\/span><\/i>last month. He didn\u2019t have time to pick up the award because he was providing training for new recruits in marine search and rescue on the Gasp\u00e9 Coast.<\/span>

Photo credit: Laurie-Edwidge Cardinal (Incontournable Productions)<\/figcaption><\/figure> Ted is known as a well-traveled serial entrepreneur and spent the bulk of his career in the sports technology sector as he pursued alpine skiing at an elite international level. Today, Ted is less focused on business ventures and more driven to improve marine, fire, and rescue services. Most of his time and effort focuses on the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (Quebec) \u2013 a non-profit organization dedicated to search and rescue on marine waters. His territory is Zone 2 (Bas-Saint-Laurent\/Gasp\u00e9sie). Ted\u2019s job? You name it: rescuer, coxswain, instructor, commander of the Rimouski Unit, Director of Communications, Board Member, and Director. To date, he\u2019s participated in more than 100 marine rescue missions, served as a volunteer firefighter, and committed numerous hours to organize Marine Search and Rescue (SAR) capacities.\u00a0<\/span>One almost needs the <\/span>Jaws of Life <\/span><\/i>to get Ted to talk about the award. He will talk, however, if the discussion inspires improvement in public safety in the marine search and rescue, and fire and rescue services. Ted and his team strive to increase training and acquire equipment with federal and provincial support \u2013 a never-ending challenge for this volunteer organization. Training is expensive, says Ted, especially quality training.
