The tale begins some 15 years ago, with local summer resident and visual artist Janis Gillan hatching a plan to create something big for the community.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As she, her sister Debbie and their mother, Ailsa Gillan were spending more time in Metis each year, they had the good fortune to meet many locals, francophone and anglophone alike.\u00a0 It became apparent to them that a meeting place needed to be created so that all members of the community would be able to enjoy the same benefits of acquaintance\u2026francophones, anglophones, locals, summer residents, tourists&#8230;the whole gang!<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Serendipity led Janis to purchase the perfect location for this meeting place, the building at 160 rue Principale.\u00a0 The long-shuttered shoe shop wasn\u2019t on the market but when the realtor requested a visit by Janis and Debbie, Madame Leblond agreed, after many years of saying no.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was very much a \u201cmeant to be\u201d moment.\u00a0 Upon entering the front door of the old shop, both Janis and Debbie were flooded with memories of going into the store as young girls with their mother to buy new summer beach shoes.\u00a0 Memories of being awed by the formidable presence and deep voice of the tender-hearted Madame flooded back.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Janis even had the very visceral sensation of their long deceased grandfather, Arthur Mathewson, taking her by the hand and leading the two sisters through the shop\u2026.shelves still full of boxes of shoes covered in decades of dust.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meeting the formidable woman, sitting by the wood stove in the back kitchen, Janis recalls \u201cwhen we introduced ourselves as Arthur Mathewson\u2019s granddaughters I thought Madame Leblond was going to fall out of her chair!\u00a0 The dramatic reaction was in part because Madame\u2019s late husband had been a good friend of our grandfather.\u201d\u00a0 There was an instant emotional connection between them and a very strong sense that this was absolutely the right place for this project.\u00a0 Following in the community-minded footsteps of their mother, Ailsa and their grandfather, Arthur, the sisters knew they could make it happen.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In local contractor Reno Isobel\u2019s very capable hands, Janis\u2019 vision of a warm inviting space came to life.\u00a0 Having financed the project herself, she poured her heart and soul into its every detail.\u00a0 Drawing on her background as both an interior designer and artist, the space inspired the desired coming together.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Janis consciously did not restrict the vision for the space except to create an inclusive space that would be responsive to the community\u2019s needs and wishes.\u00a0 Heritage Lower St. Lawrence was a great supporter and user of the cafe, offering art classes, children\u2019s craft classes, and various workshops for the community and inviting musicians, storytellers, and other incredible performers to showcase their talent. As the demand grew, Janis put in a small stage, adding to the versatility of the space.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The response to these offerings and outpouring of creativity from the community was remarkable.\u00a0 Janis remains in awe of how much artistic talent there is in the area.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Janis\u2019 patience and faith in the community paid off.\u00a0 Whatever historical divisions may have existed, they were not going to stand in the way.\u00a0 She says \u201cIn my mind this space would work, without a doubt, because those divisions didn\u2019t and don\u2019t make sense\u201d.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her sister Debbie, a source of incredible support to Janis throughout the caf\u00e9 project, adds \u201cThe fact that Heritage Lower St. Lawrence is taking on this project is very significant.\u00a0 It\u2019s very reassuring that the space is being maintained as a community hub\u2026it has come full circle\u201d.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/heritagelsl.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Cafe-sur-mer-fond-blanc-291x300.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/heritagelsl.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SAM_0478-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":14039,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-15918","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-general"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.0 -
