{"id":27015,"date":"2026-11-04T14:40:29","date_gmt":"2026-11-04T19:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heritagelsl.ca\/?p=27015"},"modified":"2026-11-04T14:40:30","modified_gmt":"2026-11-04T19:40:30","slug":"november-is-make-a-will-and-poa-month-and-financial-literacy-month-quebec-is-leading-in-both","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heritagelsl.ca\/fr\/november-is-make-a-will-and-poa-month-and-financial-literacy-month-quebec-is-leading-in-both\/","title":{"rendered":"November Is Make-a-Will (and PoA) Month and Financial Literacy Month \u2013 Quebec is leading in both"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you know Quebecers are significantly better prepared than the rest of Canada when it comes to incapacity and estate planning, with <strong>50<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>58% holding a valid will<\/strong> and <strong>45% having a protection mandate?\u00a0<\/strong> This compares to, respectively, <strong>40-47%<\/strong> (wills) and <strong>30-36%<\/strong> (powers of attorney) across the rest of the country.\u00a0 Quebec\u2019s streamlined notarized system automatically registers documents centrally and avoids costly court fees, serving as a great model for Financial Literacy Month on why getting your affairs in order early saves loved ones time, money, and hassle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many wills and mandates across the country, however, are partly or significantly out of date \u2013 even in Quebec.&nbsp; If you don\u2019t have them, or if they need significant updating, government officials or the law will determine what happens if you become incapacitated or die, causing headaches and costs for your loved ones.&nbsp; Illnesses and accidents are a fact of life: wouldn\u2019t you prefer to choose someone to make legal, financial, property, and health care decisions for you if you cannot?&nbsp; Wouldn\u2019t you rather appoint the person who will carry out your wishes, name the guardian for any young children, and decide how your property should be distributed after you die?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/heritagelsl.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Death-and-taxes-819x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27016 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/heritagelsl.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Death-and-taxes-819x1024.jpeg 819w, https:\/\/heritagelsl.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Death-and-taxes-240x300.jpeg 240w, https:\/\/heritagelsl.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Death-and-taxes-768x960.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/heritagelsl.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Death-and-taxes.jpeg 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long-time Metis summer resident and three-time co-executor Barb Amsden wrote a common-sense plain-language (and sometimes humorous) book about how to prepare for and manage the inevitable.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laughatdeathandtaxes.com\/\">How to Laugh at Death and Taxes<\/a> is available at bookstores or online as a digital edition.
