On Sunday May 31, 2026, HLSL is delighted to present the culmination of a two-year project funded by Canadian Heritage, with performance, writer, voice and Alexander artist Janet Madelle Feindel, for the community performance of ‘Living Voices.’
Eight members of the English-speaking community of Bas St Laurent have been attending workshops to explore figures who have had significant impact on their own lives. Exploring somatic writing, voice/AT, artifacts, images, letters and storytelling, each participant has devised a short performance piece, as a tribute to each of these entities. Together, they weave a poignant and humorous tapestry.

For four generations, Janet Madelle Feindel’s family spent summers at their property at Cap à l’Orignal, now known as Parc national du Bic. Following the expropriation by the government in the late twentieth century, the family lost access to the land. The artist has been returning to Lower Saint Lawrence to explore her family roots, illuminating a vibrant community who helped sustain the rich beauty and natural heritage of the region. Many made significant contributions to Quebec, notably her grandmother, Anna Marks Lyman (née Scrimger) who co-founded and served as co-president (alongside Marie Gérin-Lajoie) of the Comité provincial pour le suffrage féminin (Provincial Committee for Women’s Suffrage), advocating for women’s right to vote and run as candidates provincially. Feindel is creating a solo performance piece, Les Voix Vivant du Passé, based on these dynamic characters.
HLSL has been delighted to support this project exploring the English-speaking heritage of the Bic area, and to foster the development of new creative community work in the Lower Saint Lawrence.
