Metis-sur-Mer, February 15, 2022 – Heritage Lower Saint Lawrence (HLSL) is pleased to launch its first call for submissions for its community-engaged artist residency program. This call for submissions is part of the Art of Resilience Project, funded by Canadian Heritage, with the objective to enhance the vitality of the English-speaking community of the Lower Saint Lawrence region. This 2022 call for submissions is open to English-speaking Quebec artists in various artistic disciplines from outside the Lower Saint Lawrence region.
What we are looking for
One (1) artist available for a three- (3-) week community-engaged artist residency: 30 April to 21 May 2022. The artist will engage with the community members in the region in interactive workshops. The residency will culminate with a public presentation of the community-engaged work of art and the process of creation. These interactions will be held in accordance with the health measures imposed by government authorities at the time of their residency.
What we offer to the artist
- Accommodation for 3 weeks at 3 locations
- One week at Bic Domaine Floravie
- One week at Lighthouse Keepers’ house at Metis Lighthouse
- One week at Maison d’Ariane, owned by the International Garden Festival
- Travel expenses – up to $400
- Artist fees for the entire project – $4,500
- Living expenses for 3 weeks – $1,050
- Material needed for production or workshops – up to $1,000
Important considerations
The following are important considerations for the project:
- The artist is able to work with community participants of all ages (including vulnerable seniors and youth in school).
- The artist is able to add value and/or share skills/knowledge with the community.
- The residency will culminate with a public presentation of the community-engaged work of art and the process of creation.
- The process needs to take into account the constraints of public health guidelines.
What we expect from the artist
- Be present during the entire duration of the residency.
- Be autonomous and carry out the residency in accordance with the agreement between the artist and HLSL.
- Consult project key stakeholders in the conception and preparation phase.
- Work with HLSL team on the communications and publicity related to the project
- Share the fruit of the creative residency during at least one meeting or event with the public, at designated location(s) agreed with HLSL.
- Be responsible for the preparation of meals, and respecting the rules, health guidelines and special considerations of the accommodation provided.
- Be autonomous in travel and in getting around.
- No smoking and no animals are permitted in the accommodation provided.

→ Workshops or activities offered to engage the community (including seniors, youth in school, open to anyone)
→ Technical and material resource requirements (if applicable)
(c) Curriculum vitae (maximum 2 pages)
(d) Portfolio of previous achievements, particularly in working with communities (maximum 2 pages)

Evaluation criteria and jury selection
A jury of 5 will choose the candidate according to the following criteria:
- Community engagement and impact (50%)
- Feasibility (25%)
- Artistic path, process and past achievements (25%)
Applications from artists who do not fit the profile we are looking for, received after the deadline of Tuesday, 8 March 2022 at 4:00 p.m. or who do not respect the composition of the application package, as requested above, will not be submitted to the jury.

Joan Sullivan is a documentary and abstract photographer focused on climate change and the energy transition. She is an English-speaking Quebec artist residing in the Lower Saint Lawrence region. The featured photo on the call for submissions belongs to her abstract photo series “Je suis fleuve” (English translation: “I am river”) that explores her eco-anxiety about climate change and the disappearing winter ice on the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec, Canada.

Métis-sur-Mer, le 15 février 2022 – Héritage Bas-Saint-Laurent est heureux de lancer son premier appel de candidatures pour une résidence d’artiste engagée auprès de la communauté. Celui-ci fait partie du projet «Art of Resilience», financé par Patrimoine Canada, dont l’objectif est de favoriser l’épanouissement des minorités anglophones de la région du Bas-Saint-Laurent. Cet appel de candidatures 2022 est ouvert aux artistes québécois d’expression anglaise dans diverses disciplines artistiques provenant de l’extérieur de la région du Bas-Saint-Laurent.
Ce que nous recherchons
Un(e) (1) artiste disponible pour une résidence d’artiste engagée auprès de la communauté de trois (3) semaines : du 30 avril au 21 mai 2022. L’artiste animera des ateliers avec les membres de la communauté de la région. La résidence se terminera par une présentation publique de l’œuvre d’art réalisée avec la participation de la communauté et du processus de création. Ces interactions se dérouleront dans le respect des mesures sanitaires imposées par les autorités gouvernementales au moment de leur résidence.
Ce que nous offrons à l’artiste
- Hébergement pendant 3 semaines à 3 endroits
- Une semaine à la Maison ancestrale du Domaine Floravie au Bic.
- Une semaine à la Maison des gardiens du Phare de la Pointe Mitis.
- Une semaine à la Maison d’Ariane, gérée par le Festival international de jardins.
- Frais de voyage – jusqu’à concurrence de 400$
- Honoraires de l’artiste pour l’ensemble du projet – 4 500$
- Frais de subsistance pour 3 semaines – 1 050$
- Matériel nécessaire à la production ou aux ateliers – jusqu’à concurrence de 1 000 $.
Considérations importantes
Les points suivants sont des considérations importantes pour le projet :
- L’artiste est capable de travailler avec des participants de la communauté de tous âges (y compris les personnes âgées vulnérables et les jeunes à l’école).
- L’artiste est capable d’apporter une valeur ajoutée et/ou de partager ses compétences/connaissances avec la communauté.
- La résidence se terminera par une présentation publique de l’œuvre d’art engagée dans la communauté et du processus de création.
- Le processus doit prendre en compte les contraintes des directives de santé publique.
Ce que nous attendons de l’artiste
- Être présent pendant toute la durée de la résidence.
- Être autonome et réaliser la résidence conformément à l’accord entre l’artiste et l’organisme.
- Consulter les acteurs clés du projet dans la phase de conception et de préparation.
- Travailler avec l’équipe d’Héritage BSL sur les communications et la publicité liées au projet.
- Partager le fruit de la résidence de création lors d’au moins une rencontre ou d’un événement avec le public, dans un ou plusieurs lieux désignés en accord avec Héritage BSL.
- Être responsable de la préparation des repas et respecter les règles, les directives sanitaires et les considérations particulières de l’hébergement fourni.
- Être autonome dans ses déplacements.
- Il est interdit de fumer et d’introduire des animaux dans les logements fournis.
