Ting recently joined the Heritage team as Community Development Agent for the Rimouski region. She will be responsible for managing the Resource Centre and our team of volunteers who help us keep our library and events running smoothly. We are beyond thrilled to have Ting, who is as accomplished as she is warm and friendly. Where are you from? Where is home for you? My origin is Beijing, China, and a portion of my family comes from another city called Jilin, situated in northeast of China, which has the same altitude as Quebec. It’s a coincidence that the city and the province have the same name, Jilin Province and Jilin City, just like Quebec Province and Quebec City. The winter there is very snowy, but it only lasts for 3 months instead of 5 or 6 months like in Quebec. I’ve lived in this place for 16 years already, and I’m surrounded by my loved ones, my husband and daughter. Our circle includes both local and international friends. Rimouski is already my second home.
Did you know about poutine before you arrived? Best place to get it if you do know? No, not at all. Fries in China were not something I enjoyed before. I ordered poutine in English in Rimouski for the first time, thinking it was like pizza, so I got one 14″ large poutine. It’s hard to believe, but they ended up in the trash. There are many typical poutines everywhere in Quebec, each with its specialties. But Cantine de la Gare is a long-established poutine snack bar in Rimouski, and Chef Fred Poutinerie just near our RRC is new and creative.
What is your favorite place in the Lower Saint Lawrence, and why?I love many places, in fact. Ste. Luce, not very far but nice to take a walk at the beach in different seasons. Bic is always famous for hiking with family and friends. Italian winery Carpenterie is really good to visit and take a glass or some Italian snacks with the family and friends. Your favorite pastime? I enjoy doing exercises at the gym and playing board games with my family and friends.
What is your idea of perfect happiness? Having gratitude for what you have now is essential for happiness, even if nothing is perfect.
What talent would you most like to have? I am not seeking to be a talented person; I am who I am. However, it would be great to have the superpower to travel around the world with my family wherever we want without using long-distance transportation!
What is your greatest achievement? In Rimouski, I have a wonderful family with an adorable girl and great food to eat. I am in good health both mentally and physically, surrounded by good friends, and doing what I enjoy. All of this is what I consider to be my greatest achievement.
What is your motto? Smile; the world will smile with you!
Biggest challenge? I make an effort to balance myself, my family, and my work. My desire is to be with my daughter for as long as possible. With time, we will be able to fulfill our dreams of traveling around the world together. We would like to see her live a happy and healthy life and pursue her passion for work.
