Hearing Issues in Seniors By Sylvie Auger, Audiologist

As we get older, our auditory system as well as our balance system changes like every other sensory modality. What are these typical changes, when do we expect them to happen and are there some ways that we can slow their progression or even, maybe, prevent further deterioration?

Objectives

  • To understand the impact of a hearing loss on cognitive functions
  • To understand how hearing and balance are intricately related

About Your Presenter

Ms. Auger obtained her Masters degree in Audiology & Speech Therapy from the Université de Montréal She worked in hospitals and rehabilitation centers prior to opening her own private clinic, Audiology Centre West in Montreal 25 years ago. Over the years she has offered services in hearing health for all ages, eventually specializing in tinnitus & hyperacusis issues as well as balance and equilibrium problems. She also taught at both Université de Montréal and Université d’Ottawa as an assistant professor and is currently still regularly invited to present to the students in audiology. In 2016, she received the “prix carrière en audiologie” from her peers at the school of audiology and speech therapy at Université de Montréal. That award recognizes the innovative contribution of an audiologist, who has significantly contributed to the development and advancement of the profession, being an inspiration to students.
