Marie-Claude Giroux

Marie-Claude Giroux est un visage amical reconnaissable dans le village de Métis-sur-Mer et dans les bureaux d’Héritage Bas-Saint-Laurent. Elle travaille pour la communauté depuis de nombreuses années, dont 16 à HLSL. Cet automne, elle prend sa retraite, mais sa présence dans la communauté se poursuivra sûrement. Marie-Claude Giroux is a recognizable friendly face around the village of Métis-sur-Mer and in the offices of Heritage Lower St. Lawrence. She has worked for the community for many years, and has given 16 of those to working at HLSL. This fall, she is retiring, but her presence in the community will surely continue. Enjoy your retirement–it’s well deserved.       Q: Where are you from? Where is home for you?Je viens de Québec, j’ai grandi à Limoilou jusqu’à mes 17 ans. Puis j’ai habité Montréal pendant deux ans.Mais mon chez-moi est Métis-sur-Mer ! J’ai passé tous mes étés ici depuis mes 6 ans ; et les vingt-cinq premières années, ma famille louait cette maison juste en face de Turriff Beach, le charme a opéré ! J’habite Métis à l’année depuis mes 19 ans, soit depuis plus de 40 ans maintenant.I am from Québec City, Limoilou, lived there up to 17 years old. I also lived in Montreal for two years. But my home is Métis-sur-Mer! I have spent every summer here since I was six years old; and for the first twenty-five years, my family rented this house just across from Turriff Beach, and the charm worked! I have lived in Métis year-round since I was 19, so for over 40 years now.     Q: What is your favourite place in the Lower Saint Lawrence, and why?Métis-sur-Mer ! C’est le plus bel endroit ! Il offre un environnement hors du commun, quantité de repères paysagers, un littoral riche, un ensemble architectural unique, une végétation généreuse, une intimité précieuse qui nous fait sentir privilégiés…J’apprécie aussi être en contact avec les gens de ma communauté, les jeunes et les moins jeunes, de longue date ou nouveaux arrivants, francophones, anglophones locaux et estivants.  Métis-sur-Mer! It’s the most beautiful place! It offers an extraordinary environment, a wealth of landmarks, a rich coastline, unique architecture, lush vegetation, and a precious intimacy that makes us feel privileged…I also appreciate being in contact with the people in my community, young and old, long-time residents and newcomers, French-speaking, English-speaking locals and summer residents.   Q: What is your idea of perfect happiness?Sur les plages de Métis avec mes petites-filles et mon petit-fils… marcher sur les bois de grève, escalader les rochers, faire des constructions ou dessiner dans le sable, sans oublier d’y ramasser les déchets ! On the beaches of Métis with my granddaughters and grandson… walking on the driftwood, climbing rocks, building things or drawing in the sand, not forgetting to pick up trash.Q: What is your greatest achievement? Il m’est impossible d’en choisir un seul. J’ai participé et/ou initié et/ou coordonné beaucoup de projets depuis ces derniers 40 ans et je suis fière de mes implications et réalisations. Je me permets d’en mentionner quelques-unes : 10 ans d’Info Métis, la coordination de 8 éditions de Métis en fête et 4 Grandes marches communautaires / Step Together, la mise en place du Parcours historique et maritime de Jeunesse maritime du Saint-Laurent et autres publications historiques (Il était une fois Les Boules, Parcours de notre histoire -à venir), participé à plusieurs projets de développement. Comme technologue en architecture, j’ai conçu quelques résidences et plusieurs projets de rénovation intérieures et extérieures dans les environs, dessiné quantité de mobilier sur mesure, et rendu quelques-uns de nos lieux publics plus fonctionnels (Centre des loisirs -cuisine et bloc sanitaire, cour d’école L’Envol, halte municipale). It is impossible for me to pick only one project or event.  I have participated in and/or initiated and/or coordinated many projects over the past 40 years, and I am proud of my involvement and achievements. Allow me to mention a few: 10 years of Info Métis, coordination of eight editions of Métis Celebrates and four Grandes marches communautaires / Step Together events, implementation of the Jeunesse maritime du Saint-Laurent’s Maritime and History Route and other historical publications (Il était une fois Les Boules, Trails of History -to come), participation in several development projects.  As an architectural technologist, I have designed new residences and several interior and exterior renovation projects in the area, designed a number of custom-made furniture pieces, and made some of our public spaces more functional (Centre des loisirs – kitchen and washroom facilities, L’Envol schoolyard, municipal rest stop). Dans l’ensemble, je pense avoir contribué à rendre notre communauté plus accueillante, inclusive en soutenant le sentiment d’appartenance.By and large, I believe I have contributed to making our community more welcoming and inclusive by supporting a sense of belonging.Sans oublier nos deux magnifiques filles Élise et Catherine. Not to mention our two wonderful daughters, Élise and Catherine.Q: What is your motto?  Créons un lieu commun hors du commun ! (Sabrina Dion) Bien sûr, je rêve de l’appliquer à Métis, mais pourquoi pas à la terre entière ? Osons innover !  Let’s create a shared place that is anything but common! A loose translation of the expression in French “Créons un lieu commun hors du commun ! ” (Sabrina Dion) Of course, I dream of applying this to Métis, but why not to the whole world? Let’s dare to innovate!Q: Biggest regret?Ne pas être parfaitement bilingue. Depuis toutes ces années, j’ai profité d’un apprentissage continu, j’ai développé une grande compréhension, j’ai acquis beaucoup de vocabulaire, je suis capable de discuter, MAIS je me sens encore parfois limitée et je déteste ça ! Not having become perfectly bilingual. For all those years, I was exposed to ongoing learning opportunities, and I have developed a great understanding, acquired a lot of vocabulary, am able to discuss, BUT I still sometimes feel limited and I hate this! Q: Your favourite pastime?J’adore prendre le temps de lire et je profite de notre belle bibliothèque !  Mais je devrai bientôt avoir plusieurs passe-temps ! J’espère retrouver du temps pour le piano, le tennis, développer mon potager, et continuer de m’impliquer dans quelques projets citoyens.  I love taking the time to read and I enjoy our beautiful library!  But I will soon need to have several hobbies! I hope to find time for piano, tennis, developing my vegetable garden, and continuing to be involved in a few community projects.
