Lynn Fournier is a visual artist and longtime art teacher at the Metis Beach School. She’s led countless workshops for Heritage over the years, and even volunteered for us as a board member a long time ago! She recently facilitated pottery-making workshops as part of our Earth to Earthenware project, funded by Canadian Heritage.
As a painter, Lynn currently has more time to devote to her craft as she progressively retires from her teaching role at MBS. She frequently sets up her easel outside in Metis-sur-Mer and environs. She was recently selected to be featured in Outdoor Painter magazine, in a piece highlighting the outdoor colours of autumn. Where are you from?
Both my parents are from the Gaspé, but work brought them to Montreal. A rural town North of Montreal is where I spent my youth, then we moved to Montreal so my sisters and I could go to college. I went to Dawson College to study illustration and design. Before returning to school to complete my art education degree I worked for several years in the clothing industry. This gave me the opportunity to travel, explore and meet wonderful people.
Where is home for you?
For the past 23 years, home has been in Metis, facing the St. Lawrence. Every morning I take a bit of time to appreciate the sea and watch the birds.
What is your favourite place in the Lower Saint Lawrence, and why?
I am happiest when on or near the water. I cannot imagine living far from a large body of water like the St. Lawrence. I love the horizon and the ever-changing coast. It is both beauty and beast! Every time I have the opportunity to sail, a calmness envelops me. It’s an amazing experience!
Your favourite pastime?
I love drawing, painting, and reading about artists and art. I love observing birds. They are amazing little creatures!
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Happiness for me is a balance between spending time with family and friends and spending time contemplating nature.
What talent would you most like to have?
I would love to fly!
What is your greatest achievement?
I have been with my husband for almost 40 years and we have two wonderful children. Becoming a mother and caring for our son and daughter are the most special moments in my life.
What is your motto?
It’s what you do in the meantime that matters.
And,
There’s hardly any problem that a walk can’t solve!
Biggest regret?
I don’t have any regrets, but what makes me sad is losing friends and family and saying goodbye.
